Jeremy Saunders has 9 years worth of Key Art experience under his belt and I would like to take this opportunity to share some of them with all of you. But first what is “Key Art”?

A little bit of history

Movie posters have been and still is a big part of the industry since the earliest public exhibitions of films. What began as placards listing the programme of (short) films to be shown inside the hall or movie theater in the early 1900s evolved to featuring illustrations of scenes from each individual film or an array of overlaid images from several scenes. Other movie posters have used artistic interpretations of a scene or even the theme of the film, represented in a wide variety of artistic styles.

What is KEY ART?

Key art is a film poster used to advertise a film. It will be what the viewer remembers about the film long after the film’s original release date. There may also be several versions for one film, with variations in regards to size, content and country of production of the poster. It usually contains an image, or multiple images, composed to tell the story of the film. The titles are often designed to go with the artwork and often the names of the main actors are designed, as well. It might also include a tag line, billing block and contractual logos.

Key art can also be used to advertise a television show. Much of network advertising’s main artwork is known as key art and is used for advertising on web sites, billboards, magazines, city buses, bus shelters and banners. (Source – joseph-rey.com)

Burning Man

BURNING MAN is the reckless, sexy, funny, moving and ultimately life-affirming story of Tom, a British chef in a Bondi restaurant, who seems to have decided there are no longer any rules he needs to obey. Whatever Tom is up to, his actions seem to be tolerated by those around him.

As Tom descends into darkness, fragments of a different story begin to emerge. All the women in his world are trying in their own, very different ways to help put him back together.

Che

Che is a two-part 2008 biopic about Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Benicio del Toro. Rather than follow a standard chronological order, the films offer an oblique series of interspersed moments along the overall timeline. Part One is entitled The Argentine and focuses on the Cuban revolution from the landing of Fidel Castro, Guevara, and other revolutionaries on Cuba to their successful toppling of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista two years later. Part Two is entitled Guerrilla and focuses on Guevara’s attempt to bring revolution to Bolivia and his demise. Both parts are shot in a cinéma vérité style, but each has different approaches to linear narrative, camerawork, and the visual look. (Source)

The Motorcycle Diaries

In 1952, a semester before Ernesto “Fuser” Guevara is due to complete his medical degree, he and his older friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist, leave Buenos Aires in order to travel across South America. While there is a goal at the end of their journey – they intend to work in a leper colony in Peru – the main purpose is initially fun and adventure. They desire to see as much of Latin America as they can, more than 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) in just four and a half months, while Granado’s purpose is also to court as many women as will fall for his pick-up lines. Captain America “The First Avenger”, is the latest Marvel live action incarnation. This will feature Chris Evans as Steve Rogers “Captain America”, and Hugo Weaving as the “Red Skull”.

Captain America first appeared in March 1941, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Steve Rogers, was a sickly military recruit enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum to aid the United States war effort against the “Axis” powers in World War II. Wearing an American Flag themed costume and wielding a disc shaped shield made of an experimental alloy called “Vibranium”, which was originally intended to be made into tanks. The vibranium was created by accident and never duplicated, attempts to reverse engineer it resulted in the creation of “Adamantium”. Which was later bonded with Wolverine’s skeleton and bone claws.

The movie “Captain America – The First Avenger” will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is scheduled for release on July 22, 2011 in 3D. I hope you all enjoy and find inspiration with this roundup. After all “Cap’n” is known for being relentless, surrender is not a part of his vocabulary, a good trait to have for start-up’s in the web design arena.

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features.

Art Deco is based on mathematical geometric shapes. It was widely considered to be an eclectic form of elegant and stylish modernism, being influenced by a variety of sources.

Michael Myer’s (a.k.a. drawsgood) illustration’s falls nothing short of awesome. I first got a whiff of his genius when he did an illustrated series of the characters from the T.V. series “LOST”, immediately I became an instant fan and I’ve been stalking him ever since.

Today I bring to you his rendition of DC heroes and villains (note: actually it’s just one villain but I’m looking forward to more and will update this post when Michael is ready with them. ) He creates them in the styles of modern art deco minimalists which caught my fancy this last couple of years. I’ve been seeing them around a lot lately, mostly cult classics of movies or TV and comic book characters. The layout is simple, the color is flat, the font is classic, the texture is vintage or grunge the impact is jaw dropping, well at least for me it is. But I’m hoping to convert some of you today with the help “drawsgood” himself.

All comic-togists know there’s been quite a few human Green Lanterns in the DC Universe timeline but the most famous of them all aside from he’s really my favorite is Hal Jordan. Dude, it’s like asking who’s the best James Bond, Sean Connery or the other guys. I tried my best to make this roundup as Hal Jordan-ish as possible, but there’s just too many kick-ass graphics out there that I can’t help myself but include them here. Not to mention that the maestro Alex Ross is much into the Golden Age of the DC Universe. So it doesn’t matter if it’s Hal Jordan or Alan Scott, even Guy Gardner or John Stewart at the most you may find some Kyle Rayner in the mix but look past into the character background and you will still have the “Green Lantern”.

For me Alex Ross can make any comic book super hero come alive with depth. His style of painting, his attention to detail and the way his characters are always staring off into some far away place is uncanny.

Let me give you a sort of guided tour around the house that could possibly be mine in another life or parallel universe. Excuse me while I drool during the walk through.

Roof

Shaped to represent the waves of the ocean and almost totally covered with thin bendable photovoltaic panels to supply enough energy to the house. The Fish House’s roof is partly carpeted by grass to help cool it’s interiors even on the warmest days and provide some outdoor leisure spaces.

2nd floor den

Roomy and airy this 2nd floor entertainment area, with high ceilings that effectively help in distributing and circulating natural air coming from the sea, it also has a floor to ceiling view of the ocean that will make any guest want to stay long after the party.

Masters bedroom with T&B

A luxurious masters bedroom with open toilet and bath and a view of the garden, the Fish House integrates nature into its living space perfectly. It’s like living outdoors with all the amenities and comforts of a modern home.

Pool

A key part of the Fish House is the large pool that almost surrounds the entire structure like a moat, being a house with a full ocean view the pool links the house to the landscape and ultimately creates a visual connection with the sea.

Submerged den

This is actually my favorite part, a den with a view from the inside of the pool, here you can relax watching your favorite movies while being underwater and without getting wet. I bet the acoustics here will blow your mind!

Michael Myers (not the knife wielding, scary guy wearing a mask from the Halloween Movie franchise) is a designer and illustrator from Iowa, U.S.A. (also referred to as the “American Heartland” which incidentally gave us the spooky looking, mask wearing but hard rocking band Slipknot*) his illustrations are just phenomenal! He creates these imaginative characters that ranges from the obscene to the abstract or a fusion of spooky and funky that only makes it more interesting and fun. Michael Myers interpretation of the LOST cast makes this feature post of the week because he has given a new life to the characters we’ve all grown to appreciate throughout their 6 seasons. I was planning on seeing the sequel to the Iron Man blockbuster movie this weekend with my wife, but all the good seats were booked solid. And I don’t want to compromise the experience of watching the movie from the perfect vantage point just because I want to be one of the first to see it. The internet is overflowing with rare gems. Websites that we can consider a great find in the multitude of websites trying to get a piece of that popularity pie. As a web designer I am often on a quest in search of new skills I could include to my arsenal. And one time I was so inspired by doodle art during my research for my articles “We will, WeeWillDoodle” together with those awesome illustrated websites I’ve featured in “Inspiration: Cultural themed website designs”, that I felt like I had to try it out for myself right then and there, but I was immediately reminded of my limitations because my freehand skills are limited to just doing basic shapes and tracing.

Not to be deterred so easily I sat down to checkout our good old friend Google looking for a tutorial on “how to draw cartoons” which brought me to the website of Jeff Scarterfield from Costa Rica. As fate would have it, it was effectively titled “How to Draw Cartoons Online”. A website that teaches anyone how to draw cartoons. His style is very simple and easy to follow that anyone can do it and the lessons are totally free. You can use it for your projects or if you want to make a hobby out of it. Whatever purpose it may serve this site is one of those rare gems out there. An inspiration and a great resource of drawing styles and technique.

I featured January “Jan” Cavan’s dawghousedesignstudio.com in my previous article Inspirations: Cultural themed website designs where I highlighted her web site’s grungy doodle inspired design.

In that article I wrote that doodling and doodlers are now gaining momentum in the design community. To expand on that notion I would like to introduce you to a tribe of doodlerinos and doodlerinas from the Philippines going by the name “WeeWillDoodle”, and as their name suggests, They… Will… Doodle! And it doesn’t matter what surface it is, a wooden board, a concrete wall, shoes, I even saw their doodle work on a Honda, seriously!

What’s exciting about WeeWillDoodle is that they are comprised of individuals from different social backgrounds with diverse influences, a boiling cauldron of creativity. But they doodle collectively as one, creating one ginormous masterpiece. You can say they are like a “fusion rock band” and doodling is their music. Their website mentioned how they started out similarly, every one of them loving to doodle since they were young. And the group agrees how doodling can be a Zen-like experience, it’s a fun activity that also can spontaneously release frustrations.

The guys and gals of WeeWillDoodle has been doodling since May 2007, and it didn’t take a long time for them to get noticed. They’ve been getting commissioned to doodle on walls and/or ceilings of fashion boutiques, offices and even bedrooms. They’ve doodled on promotional merchandise, shirts, bags and on occasion some skin, you name it they will doodle on it. Check out some of their work.
